Waiting for a Late Train
Union Station, Chicago, IL
In international print competition, this image was accepted into the Professional Photographers of America 2003 General Collection book published by Marathon Press. It was also featured on the home page of the web site for Professional Photographers of America from January to June 2004. The man, with arms folded in his impatience, waits for the arrival of a passenger who is on a late arriving train. His situation is trivialized by the grandness of the surroundings. The entrance to this train station, of massive Doric style columns, is imposing and overwhelming. Union Station is one of the most impressive transportation terminals in the country; maybe even in the world. The Great Hall is just inside the doors on the left side of this image and down a marble stairway. It is an enormous, spacious room with a vaulted ceiling and skylights 90 feet above the pink Tennessee marble floor. On this day, I spent about 4 hours in and around The Great Hall trying to capture the awe that this building inspires. I had no difficulty imagining the millions and millions of footsteps, since 1925, of men in roomy dark suits, fedoras and women in long dresses, fashionable hats and furs that caused the cup-shaped wear on the marble steps.

Please be aware that the actual print will vary somewhat in color, tint, and contrast from the image you see on your monitor. A variety of factors cause this; among those factors is monitor calibration and the fact that a monitor projects light where a print reflects light.
