The Water Tower
The historic water tower on Michigan Avenue, on Chicago's Magnificent Mile, harkens to a day when nearby buildings did not dwarf it. According to my father, my great grandfather, Martin Johnson, worked in this building about the time of the great Chicago Fire. Well-tended flower beds cover much of the grounds around the tower. The lighting at night accentuates the rugged stone texture and ornate architecture. It seems out of place amid the echoing sounds of honking horns and the acceleration of internal combustion engines instead of the "clip-clop" of hooves on pavement. |
