White Building
Aurora, IL
The stunning, ornate white terra cotta building was built in 1910. It is the Sherer building and its name appears on the south facia. Mr. Sherer was the grandson of Aurora benefactor, Joseph Stolp. Some argue that the Sky Club, located at the top of the Leland Hotel (tall building in the background), was the birth place of the "blues". Famous blues artists like "Sonny Boy" Williamson, Yank Rachel, Robert Lee McCoy, Washboard Sam, and Bill "Jazz" Billium recorded songs there in 1937 and 1938. All the buildings seen in this image are located on Stolp Island. Stolp Island was purchased by W. Frederick Stolp in 1847 for $12.72. Stolp Island is on the National Register as an Historic District. The terra cotta buildings are some of the finest exhibits in this outdoor museum of architecture. (Information source: Aurora. Please be aware that the actual print will vary somewhat in color, tint, and contrast from the image you see on your monitor. A variety of factors cause this; among those factors is monitor calibration and the fact that a monitor projects light where a print reflects light.
