Congregational Church & Library
Batavia, IL
The structures of the new library lead to a landmark of Batavia's heritage. The Congregational church was built in 1856. The pristine white steeple seen here was added in 1973. High winds toppled the original steeple in 1877 and for 97 years the bell tower was covered by a mansard roof that gave it a gothic appearance. The original windows were shuttered. Stained glass was installed in 1899.
