The Heron
at Batavia's North (Challenge) dam
Amid the relics of an urban setting, the heron rests on a fallen tree. The building in the background is part of the former Challenge Windmill factory in Batavia, IL. In the early part of the 20th Century, Batavia was one of the nation's biggest windmill makers. Batavia is called "Windmill City". The building in the background was the Challenge factory's "wood room" of the Challenge. It produced all wooden parts for water tanks. The dam is above the heron's head where the water's reflection stops. It provided the electricity to power the factory. This heron posed patiently for over an hour as I waited for clouds to part so the sun would backlight him. Pedestrians walking along the Riverwalk nearby caused him no concern. Only when a person walking a dog on a leash did the bird become noticeably "ruffled". |
