The Little Gazebo

Batavia, IL

The Fox River is the water source for this calm water at the Batavia River Walk. People skate on it in winter and paddle on it in the summer. The subject of this image, the Smith-Gunzenhauser gazebo, was built in Europe around 1900. It's an historic ornament of the River Walk, surrounded by flowers and ground cover.

The story of the Gunzenhausers reminds me of the great comedian Jack Benny. When Benny played his violin, people grimaced and held their hands over their ears. Mr. Gunzenhauser's violin playing must have had a similar effect upon Mrs. Gunzenhauser. The gazebo was located in their yard a fair distance from the house, and as the story goes, this was the only place she allowed him to play his violin or smoke his cigars. It was his hideaway.

In 1988 a developer cleared the land to build a home on the Gunzenhauser's property. He donated the gazebo to the Batavia Park District.

I took this photograph on a misty October morning as the sun began warming the land.

Please be aware that the actual print will vary somewhat in color, tint, and contrast from the image you see on your monitor. A variety of factors cause this; among those factors is monitor calibration and the fact that a monitor projects light where a print reflects light. Your purchase is guaranteed to please you or you may return it for a refund.
