Citadel on the Hill
Baker Memorial United Methodist Church dominates the east ridge of the Fox River in St. Charles, IL. The bell tower is some 85 feet high. The St. Charles philanthropist, Col. Baker, provided the funding to build the church in the memory if his parents. It was designed by the Geneva, IL architectural and engineering firm of Gray, Laz and Mall and constructed by the LaSalle Construction company of Chicago, IL. In June of 1953 a Bible, Methodist Hymnal, and list of church membership was placed in the cornerstone. The dedication ceremony September 19, 1954 was attended not only by local people, but by IL Governor Stratton and other dignitaries. |
